With great sadness we announce the passing of Alan Cavell. Alan lived his life with integrity, drive and steadfast commitment. He was a much-loved life partner of Jacqueline Powell, father and stepfather of Stuart, Matthew (Charlotte), Amy (Paul), and Vanessa (Michael); and Grandpa of Maeve, Rowan, Darragh, Euan, Callum and Nolan. Alan was predeceased by three infant grandsons.
Alan was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, to Sidney and Rachel Cavell. He grew up on a farm in Sarawak Township, helping with farm work from an early age. Alan was the youngest of seven children, predeceased by Bill, Joan, Phyllis, Marjorie, Gayle and survived by Kaye. He was the proud uncle of numerous nieces and nephews and is lovingly remembered by many other relatives, friends and community connections.
After high school, Alan left the farm to pursue a degree in Political Studies & Public Administration at the University of Guelph. As a proud Guelph alumnus, he continued his studies there and completed a Master of Science in Extension Education, focused on non-formal community education, leadership and outreach. His passion for making a difference in the community was a life-long pursuit.
Alan spent his entire career working and living his values of caring and social justice. His early career was Program Supervisor, Ministry of Community and Social Services. He supported the development of countless programs to allow older adults to remain well and independent. For example, Alan’s vision and support were instrumental in the development of Community Care organizations throughout Ontario.
After many years as a Program Supervisor, Alan became the Executive Director of Victoria Manor Home for the Aged in Lindsay. His next adventure and greatest career passion lasted for many years. He served as Executive Director of Victoria Order of Nurses (VON) branches. At VON he was able to lead, expand and stabilize programs and services in Hastings, Northumberland and Peterborough, North Bay, Durham, Kingston, Calgary and Ottawa.
After retirement Alan became his own boss, purchasing, renovating and leasing three family homes. His values and commitment to quality and kindness were recognized by the tenants of those homes. One tenant referred to him as “an earth angel”. He also invested his time in numerous voluntary causes including Community Care Peterborough, Thrive, and Universal Basic Income.
Alan will be remembered for his “punny” sense of humour, profound kindness, generosity and quiet strength. He will be sorely missed by family, friends and community colleagues.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday May 2nd from 1 to 4 pm at the Holiday Inn Peterborough.
In honour of Alan donations to VON Canada or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
