Obituary

PIERCE, Eileen Jane  (HILAND, née SCHOALES) – At Princess Gardens Retirement Residence, on May 19th, 2023 in her 105th year.   Beloved wife of the late John G. Pierce and the late Joseph H. Hiland.  Dear mother of Robert “Bob” Hiland (Kathy) of Manotick, Barb Hiland (Murray Gammie) of Ennismore and Richard Hiland (Cheryl) of Bridgenorth.  Much loved Nana to Devon (Celina), Joleen (Brian), Liam (Alissa), Kieran (Lynne), Reece and Keltie. A beloved Great-Nana to Logan, Hailey, Kaelyn, Tegan, Kiera, Torin, McKeeley and Brody.  Sister of the late Frank Schoales and the late Arthur Schoales. Native to Peterborough, Eileen moved to Ottawa in 1960 with her husband and young family and became very active in the Volunteer Auxiliary of the Ottawa Civic Hospital, particularly the Heart Institute where she is known to have established the Family Lounge for patients and their families. As the President for the Volunteers, Eileen devoted 25 years of volunteer work to the two Ottawa Hospitals. She also assumed the post of Vice President of the Ontario Hospital Association. Returning to Peterborough in 1985, Eileen again volunteered at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Eileen was also very active as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels Program.  A Celebration of Eileen’s Life will be held later in the summer. If so desired, in memory of Eileen, donations to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, would be appreciated by the family.
