Obituary

Elizabeth “Beth” Anna Hoare, aged 71, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026, in Peterborough, Ontario, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family.

Born in Barrie, Ontario, she was the cherished daughter of the late Noah and Elise (Rowat) Cotton. Beth was the beloved and devoted wife of John Hoare; the deeply loved mother of Marc (Jennifer), and Amy (Chris) and ‘Nana’ to Brinley, who was her absolute pride and joy.

Beth’s lifelong dedication to caring for others began early. After graduating from Barrie District Central Collegiate in 1973, she poured her energy into supporting youth through Big Brothers and Simcoe County Recreation. Her passion for children led her to the Peterborough County Board of Education, where she served as a dedicated Educational Assistant for special needs children throughout the 1990s. Beth’s compassion knew no bounds; she and John opened their hearts and home as foster parents through the Children’s Aid Society for 15 years, providing stability and love to many teenage girls, including their special foster daughter, Lizzie.

In tandem with her work in education, Beth built a distinguished 32-year career in healthcare. After earning her Medical Clerical Terminologies diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College in 1988, she began working as a Ward Secretary at St. Joseph’s General Hospital. Her professionalism and warmth later anchored the teams at the Peterborough Civic Hospital and ultimately the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, from which she retired in 2020.

Beth lived a life beautifully defined by humour and resilience. She was a constant source of joy, and she was always happiest spending time with her family at Shining Sands on Georgian Bay. Her infectious laugh, bright spirit, and gentle guidance left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Family and friends are invited to come together to share memories and celebrate Beth’s beautiful life on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, located at the Knights of Columbus, 317 Hunter Street West, Peterborough. Light refreshments will be served.

In lieu of flowers, and in honour of Beth’s enduring spirit of care, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Hospice Peterborough.
