John Mackay Obituary

MACKAY, John Philip

John Philip Mackay passed away on September 18, 2021, in Peterborough, Ontario, from cancer.

Born on July 5, 1950, in Oshawa, Ontario, to John and Ivy (Lalonde) Mackay. He graduated from the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf in Belleville, Ontario. John married the love of his life, Lori (née Ball), on May  6, 1978, and together they raised three boys. After an early career in printing, John found his calling working with deaf students, first in Puerto Rico at the Evangelical School for the Deaf, and then at his alma mater.

Deaf from infancy, John never let his inability to hear get in his way. He loved his family, trains, the Maple Leafs, and the Blue Jays. A joyful, silly soul, John often sang to himself… and if you’ve never heard a deaf man sing, we assure you that you’re missing out. He never quite appreciated the written word the way his wife did, but he could detect the bass lines of Bachman Turner Overdrive and the Bee Gees in spite of his loss of hearing. He was, most of all, a devoted husband, father, and friend and loved his Saviour, Jesus Christ.

He was preceded in death by his father, John, mother, Ivy, and father-in-law, Donald Ball, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Lori; sons, Jonny (Jodi), Andrew (Rebecca), and Matt (Carol); grandchildren, Camdyn, Caleb, and Colin, Luke and Grace, and Blair and Owen; as well as his sister, Patti (Paul), brother, Jim (Anne),  mother-in-law, Lynda Ball, sisters-in-law Deborah (Stephen), Suzanne (Tom), Kimberley, and Andrea (Stephen), and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins who survive.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Blake and the staff at Hospice Peterborough for their loving care. Thanks also to the staff at PRHC's Palliative Care wing. Friends will be received at the HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE, 2510 Bensfort Road, for visitation on Wednesday, September 29th 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
