It is with deep sadness and profound gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Velma, on July 9, 2026, at the age of 92.

Velma was the devoted wife of her late husband, William Edward Smale, and a proud mother to her three children: Karen Campbell (Scott), Stephen Smale (Wendy), and William Smale (Tammy). She made many sacrifices to provide opportunities for her children and took immense pride in all they accomplished. She valued education, encouraged perseverance, and was committed to giving them every opportunity to build fulfilling lives.

Nothing brought Velma greater joy than watching her family grow and flourish. She cherished her five grandchildren—Eric (Meagan), Kevin (Tarah), Carley, Luke (Cindy), and Jake—and took great pride in the lives they built. She was especially delighted by her four great-grandchildren, Orin, Frances, Lincoln, and Suri, whose laughter and love brought her immeasurable happiness.

Born on February 18, 1934, in Marmora, Ontario, Velma was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Moffatt. She was predeceased by her beloved sisters, Eva and Aileen, with whom she shared a lifelong bond. Their close relationship remained an enduring source of strength and joy throughout her life.

For many years, Velma worked at Canadian General Electric, where she was known for her dedication and exceptional work ethic. From humble beginnings, she built a meaningful and secure life through perseverance, careful planning, and determination. She believed in honest work, personal responsibility, and treating others with kindness—principles that guided every aspect of her life.

One of Velma’s defining qualities was her generosity. Even when her own means were modest, she believed in helping others and faithfully supported her local food banks. She often said, “What you give from one hand, you gain from the other,” a philosophy that reflected her compassion, kindness, and quiet generosity. She didn’t simply believe those words; she lived them.

Velma passed away peacefully while spending time with her granddaughter, Carley. They had been sharing laughter and conversation and were preparing to go shopping together. She left this world as she had lived—independent, practical, and surrounded by love.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no traditional funeral service. Velma requested cremation, followed by a private family graveside service, reflecting her humble nature and her desire for a peaceful farewell.

Velma lived a remarkable life defined by hard work, a deep faith in God, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her quiet strength, practical wisdom, and kindness touched everyone who knew her. The values she lived by will continue to inspire those she loved for generations to come.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and the many friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her. Though she is no longer with us, her love and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Service Information

A private family graveside service celebrating Velma’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Little Lake Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Kirk Goodman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Kawartha Food Share or The Salvation Army would be appreciated in honour of Velma’s lifelong commitment to helping those in need.
